When to use it
Dark-mode hero backgrounds, Japanese art or travel themes, ambient looping screensavers needing a painterly aesthetic.
When not to
Light backgrounds (sky hardcoded dark); contexts needing more than 4 distinct scene states without code changes.
Working with an AI agent
Every component ships agent-ready metadata. An example instruction for this one:
Add a fifth view to VIEWS: {top:'#4a2040', bot:'#e87060', weather:'mist', moonX:0.50, moonY:0.18, label:'autumn dusk'}, and increase DUR to 11 for a slower cycle. Theme: dark tokens live in :root, the light variant in :root[data-theme="light"]; ?theme=light or a {type:'forever:theme'} postMessage switches at runtime.
Safe to edit
- VIEWS array (sky colors, weather type, moon position, label)
- DUR constant (cycle duration in seconds, default 9)
- moon radius (Math.min(W,H)*0.045)
- particle count (120 in seedParts)
- torii horizontal drift amplitude (W*0.02)
- theme tokens (:root dark defaults + [data-theme=light] overrides)
Keep intact
- IIFE wrapper
- prefers-reduced-motion guard (REDUCED flag)
- visibilitychange stop/start pair
- DPR-aware fitCanvas sizing
- theme hook (?theme= bootstrap + forever:theme message listener + theme tokens)
Known limitations
- Background color hardcoded to dark navy — must edit CSS to change
- Weather particle system reuses the same 120 particles across all weather types so density is fixed
- Cross-fade only blends the last 22% of each scene — abrupt if DUR is very short
More Ukiyo-e Weather & Road components
- Sudden RainUp to 140 slanted rain streaks fall in two depth layers over a painted ukiyo-e scene: gradient sky, green hill, indigo river, and arched bridge silhouette.
- Bokashi SkyCanvas sky cycles dawn→day→dusk→night with bokashi gradients; sun/moon arcs overhead, stars appear at night, a bird drifts across, hills anchor the base.
- Falling SnowSnow flakes drift and sway over a ukiyo-e night scene: indigo sky, snow-capped rooftops, and a lone layered pine. Static fallback for reduced-motion.
- Distant MountainFour ukiyo-e hill silhouettes drift at different parallax rates past a snow-capped peak and glowing sun on a gradient indigo sky.
- Plum BranchA ukiyo-e-style ume plum branch with 11 blossoms that bloom open petal-by-petal, sway gently, and re-bloom every 12 seconds against layered ink hills.
- Boat on the SwellA small ferry rocks on sine-wave swells at dusk beneath a sienna sun and three circling gulls, rendered in ukiyo-e woodblock palette.
