Moire Drift

Two concentric ring grids drift apart with opposed phase, producing slow-shifting moire interference fringes via canvas lighter/difference compositing.

When to use it

Dark-background hero sections, generative art showcases, optical illusion demos, ambient looping backgrounds.

When not to

Light-background UIs (background hardcoded #0a0a0a). Contexts where users are sensitive to optical illusions or patterned motion.

Working with an AI agent

Every component ships agent-ready metadata. An example instruction for this one:

Change the ring period base by editing the P formula (e.g., minD/18 for denser rings), set ring color to a warm tone like #ffe066 for field A, and slow the drift by multiplying t by 0.5. Theme: dark tokens live in :root, the light variant in :root[data-theme="light"]; ?theme=light or a {type:'forever:theme'} postMessage switches at runtime.

Safe to edit

  • ring period density (minD/26 divisor)
  • drift speed multipliers (t*0.18, t*0.13 etc.)
  • field A stroke color (#f4f4f4)
  • drift amplitude (P*1.7, P*1.9)
  • composite modes (lighter / difference)
  • theme tokens (:root dark defaults + [data-theme=light] overrides)

Keep intact

  • IIFE wrapper
  • prefers-reduced-motion guard (drawOneFrame static fallback)
  • visibilitychange pause/resume
  • DPR-aware canvas sizing
  • theme hook (?theme= bootstrap + forever:theme message listener + theme tokens)

Known limitations

  • Background color hardcoded in both CSS and JS fillStyle — must update both to change
  • No pointer/click interactivity by design — purely passive
  • Dense ring periods on large DPR screens may stroke many arcs per frame

  • Concentric Pulse26 white rings march outward from center in a ~6s loop; a second scaled field produces slow moire interference fringes on a dark background.
  • Wave ColumnsVertical B&W stripe columns undulate via detuned sine waves, creating a woven fabric ripple with a central bulge illusion and moire interference.
  • Checker WarpA black-and-white checkerboard bends around a breathing lens at the center, slowly rotating and drifting for a hypnotic op-art illusion.
  • Line Illusion64 horizontal lines kink at a center crease with differential shading, creating a breathing 3D fold illusion of two angled sheets.
  • Spiral VertigoTwo counter-rotating Archimedean spirals at near-equal pitch create shifting moire fringes and illusory depth pull on a dark background.
